Steven Newman has over 25 years of experience in the offshore energy sector, including 21 years with Transocean, Ltd., the world’s largest offshore contract driller. Mr. Newman’s roles with Transocean included a variety of functional assignments and international postings and culminated with being named CEO on March 1, 2010. Mr. Newman led the company through the Macondo Well Incident, multiple proxy fights with activist investor Carl Icahn and a significant fleet rationalization and restructuring associated with the industry downturn in 2014. Mr. Newman retired from Transocean in 2015. He currently sits on the Boards of Dril-Quip (NYSE – DRQ), Tidewater (NYSE – TDW) and SNC-Lavalin (TSE – SNC). Mr. Newman earned a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He resides in Holladay, Utah with his wife and is the proud father of four amazing kids.
Steve will provide a brief introduction to offshore drilling, discuss some of the common challenges encountered in offshore drilling and review the events surrounding the Macondo Well Incident of April 20, 2010.
